While Amalie and JoJo finished preparing lunch, Tate went into the den with the boys to play video games after they changed out of their Sunday best. Amalie couldn’t help feeling a little nervous about that, but every time she peeked in, they seemed to be having a great time, especially as Tate could claim no expertise at the game and didn’t seem to mind getting trounced by a seven-year-old who loudly lorded it over him afterward.

Tate proved to be a quick study, however, and by the time Amalie went to call everyone to the table, he was effectively holding his own. The boys seemed impressed.

They usually dined at the bar in Amalie’s kitchen, but with Tate there, she decided to set the table. The boys took it in stride, seeming to understand that company called for extra measures. Their habit was to pray round-robin style, however, and they clearly expected that to continue.

As soon as they took their seats at the oval table, Cody cast a look between Amalie and Tate and asked, “Who starts?”

Amalie hadn’t thought to prepare Tate for this, and she didn’t want to instruct him in front of her children, so she simply said, “I will,” and bowed her head.

“Father God,” she began, “we thank You for Your bountiful provision, for our home and this meal. I thank You today especially for Tate joining us.”

Brant sat to her right, so he took up the prayer next, saying, “Thank You for my favorite, ham, and for letting me win the game!”

JoJo came next. “Thank You, Lord, for good friends and warm fires and the beauty of this season all around us.”

Cody rushed to say, “Thank You for Your Son Jesus and please let my daddy say it’s okay for me to get baptized on Christmas Day, and help Kim get a job too.”

Amalie reached beneath the table to lay a prompting hand on Tate’s knee, but before she got there, he began to speak.

“Thank You for letting me be part of today and for…bringing Amalie into my life. I can’t imagine how else that happened. And…that’s it for now, I guess. Except, You know, I could really use some help with a certain project. So if You could do something about that ...” He sounded rather tentative there at the end, so Amalie jumped in again.

“Amen.”

“Amen,” the others echoed.

She served the meal at once. Tate seemed unusually pensive, though he smiled and piled his plate and ate with apparent gusto, but when the boys were arguing good-naturedly over who would get the last dinner roll in the basket, he leaned close and asked a question.

“Do you have a computer here?”

“Of course.”

“Oh good. May I use it when we’re done?”

Seeing his plate was empty, she said, “You can use it now, if you like. May I ask why?”

He pushed back his chair, laid aside his napkin and said, “I need to show you something. I have an idea, but you need to decide what to do with it.
